The stable ester form. Tocopheryl acetate does not oxidize on your shelf the way free tocopherol does, which is the entire reason it exists.

Formulation notes
- Tocopheryl acetate is an antioxidant for skin, not for your oil phase. It is the esterified form and it does not scavenge free radicals in the bottle. If you want oxidative protection for a formula, use mixed tocopherols.
- That distinction is the most consistently mis-stated fact in DIY cosmetic literature and it will cost you a rancid batch.
- Add at cool-down, below 45 °C.
Applications
- Facial oil and serum
- Lotion and cream
- Lip balm
- Hair oil
- Body butter
- Anhydrous balms
Not classified as hazardous
No hazard classification required. Does not require a warning label under GHS criteria — confirmed against the BASF manufacturer SDS, an authoritative primary source.
- Transport classification
- Not classified as dangerous goods under ADR, RID, ADN, IMDG or IATA/ICAO. No UN number.
- Allergen statement
- Synthetic DL-alpha grade is soy-free. Natural-source D-alpha tocopherols are frequently soy-derived, and soy is an FDA major food allergen — if you specify natural grade you take on an allergen disclosure and a GMO statement. The synthetic grade sidesteps both.
