INCI note
Four genuinely different rice-ferment materials circulate under similar names and they are not interchangeable. A Saccharomyces/Rice Ferment Filtrate in a glycol carrier is a different product at three to five times the price. Read the INCI, not the product name.
The material the whole rice-water category is built on. Double-fermented rice seed water — Saccharomyces and Lactobacillus — supplied with the species and the substrate actually declared.

Formulation notes
- Heat stable only to about 60 °C. Add at cool-down or you are paying for a filtered growth medium.
- Four different materials are sold as 'rice ferment' in this market and their prices span $27 to $256 per pound. The spread is driven by which material it is, not by vendor margin. Read the INCI.
- Slightly acidic. Check your finished pH after addition, particularly in a surfactant system.
Applications
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Hair rinse and treatment
- Toner and essence
- Serum
- Sheet mask
- Scalp treatment
Not classified as hazardous
Expected not classified under 29 CFR 1910.1200. Determination confirmed per lot against the manufacturer SDS — ferment preservation systems vary and can drive classification.
- Transport classification
- Expected not regulated. Confirmed per lot.
- Allergen statement
- No FDA major food allergen. Growth medium substrate is declared in writing on every lot — several Lactobacillus media are dairy-derived and several ferment products use egg-derived lysozyme for cell lysis. If you carry a vegan or allergen claim, this is the material most likely to break it silently. We put the substrate on the COA so you do not have to ask.
California Proposition 65
Rice-derived. Inorganic arsenic compounds are Prop 65-listed. We test arsenic on every lot.
